Scholarships > Commonwealth Shared Scholarship (CSFP)

CSFP was instituted to implement the policy of the Commonwealth countries to contribute together in providing high level education and training by sharing their resources and available facilities. The Plan aims to provide a network of study opportunities throughout the Commonwealth. Although special emphasis is placed on the needs of developing nations, the scheme is intended as a genuine partnership, with opportunities and benefits for all member countries. Awards under the scheme are not made by any central body. It is for each Commonwealth country to decide whether to offer awards in a particular year, which countries will be eligible to receive them and what precise selection criteria will operate. The selection of candidates is a partnership between home and host country. When a country decides to offer awards, this is notified to those countries whose citizens will be eligible. It is then for those countries to advertise the awards, and to make the required number of nominations. These will then be sent to the host country, who will select the final recipients from nominations received. Often this will involve competition between the nominations of different countries.

Commonwealth Scholarships and Fellowships in India are offered through the Indian Council for Cultural relations, based in New Delhi. As many as 70 scholarships are awarded annually. As this site aims to help the Indian students looking for UK studies it is worth discussing UK awards. Commonwealth Scholarships in the UK are administered by the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission, a non-Departmental Public Body established by Parliament. Government funding for awards comes from the Department for International Development, which supports awards for developing Commonwealth countries, and the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, which supports awards for other Commonwealth countries. The Commission Secretariat is provided by the Association of Commonwealth Universities, based in London. Financial provision, welfare and other support is provided by the British Council. If you are a citizen of a Commonwealth country other than the UK, seeking information about UK scholarships and fellowships, the Commission currently offers the following awards:

›› Scholarships to travel to the UK to study for postgraduate qualifications
›› Scholarships to study for undergraduate qualifications at UK universities
›› Scholarships to study for UK Masters' degrees by distance learning
›› Fellowships for mid-career academics to spend periods in UK academic institutions
›› Fellowships for mid-career professional staff other than academics to spend periods in the UK
