Post graduation - The way you think

As more people have the opportunity to study for a degree, so competition for jobs becomes fiercer. To get an edge over the competition many are undertaking postgraduate courses in some relevant specialist study.

Postgraduate programmes are either research degrees or taught courses. Taught courses last from one to three years and are either designed so that you deepen your knowledge gained from your first degree or for you to convert your expertise to another field of study.

Examples of these include changing to law to become a solicitor and training to become a teacher. Most are Master's programmes, which involve classes and seminars leading up to a dissertation while certificates and diplomas are similar but without the dissertation.

Perhaps the most popular Master's at the moment, and growing in popularity, is a Master's in Business Administration (MBA). A typical MBA teaches finance, statistics and managerial economics along with knowledge of how companies compete and operate in different environments and situations (Read more in MBA section).

Research degrees are usually three years long providing Master's or doctorate qualifications. They allow you to conduct investigations into your own topic of choice and are of use in jobs where there are high levels of research and development.

Having a postgraduate qualification can, ironically, lead you to being labelled as too qualified. Many employers would prefer their recruits to have specific experience and training from working on the job - transferable skills that can count far more than just another piece of paper. This is why many careers advisors recommend that you should only start a postgraduate course after you have started a career and only if you really need to. Unfortunately in India post graduation is part of our normal education.

Post graduate studies can be divided as following four categories.
  1. Arts, humanities and languages
  2. Business Studies
  3. Law and social sciences
  4. Science and engineering
